Network marketing vs. MLM...aren't they the same thing?

In a word, no.

MLM, or multi-level marketing, generally refers to plans involving a single company, where you try to recruit a huge "downline" of people under you in order to make profits from their efforts.

Network marketing, as practiced on the Internet and in face to face dealings today, is much different. Yes, you're still trying to "build the list". These contacts are very important to you. But it's no longer about a single company, or a single product line. It's about the contacts you make.

Because you're going to make contacts that buy what you are offering. You're going to make other contacts that have something you want. You're going to form joint venture deals with some contacts. And other contacts are going to TEACH you things you never dreamed possible about how to expand your business.

Best of all, along the way, you're going to make some life-long friends.

It's how successful businessmen and entrepeneurs have always made their money. It's not what you know, it's WHO you know. It's not what your product is all about, but about who can successfully SELL your product, who can IMPROVE your product, and who can tell you what's WRONG with your product.

I recently read an interview with someone you've all heard of...Donald Trump. When asked what venue he would choose if he lost everything, and had to start all over again, he didn't even hesitate.

"Network marketing," he said.

It's all in the list.

When responding to customers' e-mail, be sincere and to the point. Before sending a message, try turning the tables. Ask yourself, "Would this answer satisfy me if I were the customer?"

Take that extra moment to give your customer the help he deserves. It might mean the difference between a satisfied customer and a credit card chargeback!

Offer Live Customer Support

E-mail has become an acceptable form of communication. But, live customer support is still necessary. The plethora of information available online can be overwhelming to customers, especially those new to the Internet!

Single your company out from the crowd by providing customers with a real person to talk to. Live phone support is an invaluable way to foster trust. When your customer has reached the end of his Internet rope, and just needs help, your toll free number is the answer he's looking for.

A traffic exchange to AVOID

In the past, I've advertised (and used) Honesty Hits for website promotion.

Not anymore.

On December 21, I purchased advertising space on the site. I received a reply on the 22nd asking for info (name, URL, etc.) for the site I wished to advertise. I replied immediately with the requested info.

By December 23, my advertisement still wasn't appearing, so I re-sent the info.

Yesterday, my ad still wasn't appearing, so once again, I re-sent the info.

Today, the ad STILL wasn't appearing, so I wrote and requested a refund. I got the refund, all right, along with a very huffy letter and the deletion of my account at Honesty Hits.

Her loss...I was her top referrer, having brought her over 50 new members in December alone.

CAVEAT EMPTOR: Join, purchase upgrades or purchase adspace from Honesty Hits at your own risk.

More free traffic tools

Free-For-All (FFA) link and free classified ad sites are great places to get your link out on the web. OK, I know, does anyone really LOOK at these sites and visit the links?

For the most part, no. But here's the interesting part...

THE SEARCH ENGINE ROBOTS DO! And the more incoming links YOUR site has, the higher it will get ranked in the search engines. Every time.

Here's an example. Do a Google Search for "yourpayline" (all one word). Yep. Most of the time, that's me, right there in the number one spot. I got there by getting my link on 1000s of FFA and classified pages. I'm not ALWAYS in the spot, there's another savvy marketer out there that I seem to alternate back and forth with.

But scroll down, and you'll see that my "Getting Started with YourPayLine" link is also consistently in the top ten search results. And that's only ONE site where I've achieved that! I'm consistently doing the same for every site I actively promote.

And no, you don't have to visit all those FFA and classified pages to post your links.

Work smarter, not harder, remember? First of all you need a good ad blaster program. I use "Ad Blaster", and I'm providing you with a free copy of it!

Just set up your ad copy, and click SUBMIT. It's THAT EASY and your ad goes out to hundreds of sites. ONE CAVEAT: use your safelisting email account for this...you're going to get mail!

Odds are, there are thousands of people out there who would LOVE your site, would BOOKMARK it, would visit every day and tell their friends about it....

If they knew about it in the first place.

And that's why traffic exchanges are a good thing. Why turn down a chance at getting someone to look at your site?

Building traffic with BlogExplosion

I've learned how to properly use BlogExplosion to build traffic. And it's not by surfing.

It's by referring others to Blog Explosion.

With over 600 surfers in my "downline" now, I don't HAVE to surf to get credits. I earn 100s of credits every day. I haven't "surfed" on Blog Explosion in over two months.

All I have to do is visit the website once a day, and assign the traffic between my sites, depending on where I want to send it.

And people say MLM doesn't work. To them, I say "Bah, humbug!" BlogExplosion is a fine example of the MLM concept...profit by getting other people to work FOR you.

Be a SPONSOR, not just a recruiter

There's a thousands of ways on the net to make money. That's a proven fact, or so many people wouldn't be participating in the various programs out there and running advertisements for them. Some of them are better than others, and offer higher earning potential. Some (thankfully, a small percentage) are outright scams.

It doesn't really matter which one you join, as long as you choose a reputable plan that has a record of growth, lots of members, and a proven track record of payment. It doesn't take much research at all to find a good one.

And yes, in most programs, you increase your profit potential when you develop a downline of others interested in the same program. That's not normally difficult to do, since they're looking for the same kinds of things that attracted YOU in the first place.

What's important is what you DO with that downline. Are you sending them a quick "thanks for signing up note" when they join? Are you establishing a rapport with them, teaching them how to promote their personal sites, maybe even helping them out by sending traffic TO their sites using some of the many tools you've learned? Are you staying in touch with them on a regular basis, and developing a long-term relationship with them?

Or are you just a recruiter?

If you were ever in the military, I'll bet you can remember your Drill Instructor's name. You'd probably recognize him if you ran into him at the mall today.

But can you remember your recruiter?

Be a sponsor, not just a recruiter.

Do you use Blog Explosion?

Do you use traffic exchanges to drive traffic to your website? Traffic exchanges are programs where you surf for credits, and then use those credits to pay for surfers coming to YOUR site.

Some examples are Honesty Hits, Blog Explosion, Traffic Swarm, 10KHits4You, LemmingRun, RaginHits, Hit Safari, and ClickAholics. I use all of them to promote my various sites, and they bring me over 1000 hits a day.

Just the FREE credits you get for joining many of these exchanges can bring you a lot of traffic, even if you never go surf again. Honesty Hits and RaginHits in particular give you 10,000 credits each JUST FOR SIGNING UP, and another 5000 credits for every new user you refer!

Be sure and read the rules on each exchange. Some require you to surf a minimum number of sites to activate your account and start getting hits to your pages. Others require a minimum number of sites visited a month to keep your account open.

Use as many of the free exchanges as you can and you can drive a phenomenal amount of traffic to your site...but all that surfing can take time. Here's a free trick for you....surf ALL your favorite traffic exchanges from a SINGLE BROWSER WINDOW AT THE SAME TIME with this free tool.

It's called Crazy Browser. Download and use it for free! Each surf page loads in a new "tab" on the browser window. Save them as a "group" in Crazy Browser, and everytime you load Crazy Browser, just open the group and start surfing. Click the tabs to shuffle between sites.

One hour a day surfing half a dozen good exchanges will put your traffic through the roof. Try it!

Website promotion: A Mini-lesson

Sales building tools

Whenever I ask people in my downlines what the biggest thing they need to help them succeed is, they all say "more traffic building tools".

They're mistaken.

Traffic is nice, but if it isn't highly targeted, it's worthless to you.

Time to get creative!

For each program you are promoting, spend a little time today designing a BRAND NEW entry page on your website. Make a list of the URLs to each page you create. Give the pages plain-text titles that don't look like affiliate links, for example, http://www.mysite.com/make-money.html, then promote the heck out of your program on each page! OK, we're up to day five of our campaign to increase sales and traffic. Here's what we've done so far. We've set realistic goals. We've spent a couple of tax-deductible dollars on advertising. We've told everyone we know, and we've joined some safelists and blasted our message out to them.

We've set up an opt-in mailing list, and offered an incentive to join it.

The only thing new we're going to do today is blast out some more email ads on our various safelists, and spend some time opening mail from Safelister and Ad Tactics to earn a few more credits. We're lazy, remember? 10 minutes a day.

If you've been following along with me, and doing the same, you've made some money this week. Using these same principles, here's how I've done.

Dollar Crazy continues to amaze me. I haven't had the sales I'd like from it, and I think a lot of the reason behind that stems from their rather weak website design....but I still make at least a sale or two every day, and their PROGRAM definitely works. It's a keeper, it's worth joining and continuing to promote. Again, this one is worth joining just for the Paylock Generator program you can download from their members area for free, never mind the $1.34 payments into your PayPal account!

$2 Empire continues to perform especially well, with total income of nearly $280 to my PayPal account as we approach the end of week three. Today, let's take a look at email safelists as a cost-effective method of getting your message out!

Safelists are a double-opt-in system. In return for agreeing to receive mails from list members, you have access to send mail to the list. Since most of the people signing up for the list are probably interested in what you have to offer, this can be very effective advertising. Many safelists let you send mail for FREE, so the price is right as well. In addition, all lists give you the opportunity to earn either additional credits or purchase credits in order to send MORE mail.

One caveat: set up a special email account to use exclusively for your safelisting. This address is going to receive a LOT of mail. (If you need a Gmail invite, just ask. I've got plenty of them.)

Yesterday, we set realistic and attainable goals, and calculated how many visitors we'd need to achieve them. Today, we make our first sale!

You've hit everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, on your contact list. You've asked for the sale.

Today, we're going to invest 10 minutes of time, and two dollars in tax-deductible advertising expense. Go to Targeted Visitors and purchase a 1000 visitor, untargeted campaign. When the campaign starts, set it to drive all 1000 visits to your site in a single day.

Out of those 1000 visitors, you're almost guaranteed at least one sale...and many of them will bookmark your site, return later and buy on the second visit. Not bad on a $1.95 investment.

Our initial 1000 visitor campaign for Dollar Crazy returned 11 sales. Today, we started a 10,000 visitor TARGETED campaign, restricted to US visitors searching for "MLM", and set the campaign up to send us 1000 visitors a day.

The very first thing to do, on the very first day, is set a realistic, attainable goal. If you are just starting out, and this is your very first project, then making 25 sales this week is an example of a realistic, attainable goal. If you've been marketing on the web for some time, then increasing sales by 10% is a good example of a realistic, attainable goal.

Next, do the math. How many people are you going to have to tell ahout your program to make one sale? Again, this will vary on your experience level. If you're just starting out, figure 500 people per sale as a safe, conservative starting point. If you've been marketing for a while, and developing a list of contacts and clients, you'll have a better idea of the audience your project will need to reach.

Next, beginner or experienced alike, reach out to your contact list. It's the most important file on your computer! Tell everyone you know about your project, why you are excited about it, and what the benefits to them are of taking part in your project. This includes friends and family, not just business contacts. And ASK FOR THE SALE! Most experienced salespeople will tell you that most sales are lost because the person making the presentation never bothered to ASK FOR THE SALE.

Dollar Crazy has really surprised me. The only thing I'm doing to promote it is drive some untargeted traffic to it via TargetedVisitors. I've spent $1.95 for a 1000-visitor campaign, and the program has produced 11 sales! Not too shabby, and I'll be renewing the campaign.

$2 Empire continues to perform especially well, with total income to my PayPal account of nearly $175 at the end of week two.

Moral of the story? Micropayment programs WORK...put them to work for you.

Buying traffic is an inexpensive way to drive traffic to your site. Targeted traffic is best, of course, but you'll see an increase in long-term traffic to your site even from a brief campaign of untargeted traffic.

OK, you've built a great site. Now how do you get people to visit it?

Preserverance, more than anything. Submit your site to search engines, for starters. Tell everyone you know about your site. Put your site's URL in your email and message board signatures.

If you're a blogger...POST. EVERY SINGLE DAY. Never let a day go by without something new on your site. And be sure you're pinging all the sites that keep track of new blog posts like blo.gs, blogrolling.com, blogshares.com, etc. Sign up and participate at BlogExplosion.

Contact the webmasters/bloggers of sites similar to yours and offer to trade links. You'll find most of them are very accomodating.

And most importantly, do SOMETHING from the above list every day. Spend 10 minutes a day, every day, and your traffic WILL grow.

Lesson 2: how to lose visitors

You're already asking. Why on earth would you want to LOSE visitors? But many new webmasters and bloggers risk exactly that from day one in their site design choices.

Let's take a look at some of the common mistakes many new webmasters and bloggers make when choosing a design for their site.

Number one would have to be the use of a dark text color against a dark background. Oh, sure, you may think blood-red on black or dark green on dark red "looks cool", but is it READABLE? If someone has to strain their eyes to read your site, you can bet they won't hang around long, and what's worse in the long run, they won't be back, either.

Repeat after me, part one: The most important visitor is the repeat visitor. If they came back, they liked what they saw the first time...and every time they return, you have another opportunity to make a sale.

Repeat after me, part two: Dark background, light text color. Light background, dark text color. And in general, dark text on a light background works best.

Another common (and similar) mistake is the use of extremely busy background images. Try reading tiny 10pt. or 8pt. white text against a closeup image of brilliant green grass. I actually saw this on a site I visited today.

And speaking of tiny fonts, while you may have 20/10 vision, most of your visitors don't. Your site should be as easy to read as the typical paperback novel.

Keep your site readable, or risk losing visitors.

Linking Out

Many websites I come across don't have a single link to another website. Ask the webmaster why not, and the answer you get is simple enough: "If I link to other websites people might leave my site." At this point I break the news that site visitors WILL leave your site. And there's nothing you can do about this.

Site visitors won't leave your site because you provide links to external sites. They'll leave for one of two reasons:

They've found what they were looking for and no longer have a reason to stay on your website.

They can't find the information they're looking for and leave to seek it elsewhere.

"OK, so site visitors are going to leave my site. But why should I hunt around for websites to link to?" I can think of four reasons why linking out is good for you and will ultimately increase traffic to your website:

1. Proof there's a real organization behind the website.

One of the best ways to prove your organisation really exists is to link to other websites that reference you. Any website willing to mention your organisation is in effect providing a reference for you. Four in five users say that being able to trust the information on a site is very important to them in deciding to visit a website (source: http://www.consumerwebwatch.org/news/1_TOC.htm).

2. Backs up your arguments.

Ensure that all statements about your organisation are backed up by third party websites. For example, if you sell toys it's very easy to make a statement such as, "We're the number one online toy seller in the country!" Anyone can make this statement, so prove that it is true by linking to an external website showing a list of the top online toy sellers last year.

3. Benefit to your site visitors.

The Internet is designed for users to flow through it from one website to the next - don't make your website the last one in the flow. If you know of websites that you find really useful, and you think your site visitors might too, be sure to link to them. By offering a range of useful links you may even come across as an industry expert and someone who really knows their stuff.

4. Search engine benefits.

One of the ways search engines try to work out what your website is about is by analysing its inbound and outbound links. The more confidence a search engine has of what your website's about, all other things being equal, the higher search engine ranking you'll achieve. By providing outbound links to related sites you actually help the search engines analyse your site and therefore help your search ranking.

Lesson 1: Hide your affiliate links

Before I even start getting into presenting any of the affiliate programs that are working for me on my other sites, I want to start you off on the right foot.

You absolutely MUST hide your affiliate links. The reason for this is that the source code to your site is visible to anyone who cares to look at it...and available to any dishonest person who might want to steal your traffic. Trust me, it happens on a regular basis.

There are software tools you can obtain to do this, but the very easiest thing is to use is tinyurl.com.

At TinyURL, you can enter a long URL like:

http://www.myaffilateprogram.com/affiliates/0125687

and get back something that looks like:

http://tinyurl.com/ar5ks

Don't click those links, obviously, they're not real. TinyURL is a free redirection service that makes it easy to disguise your affiliate links.

Welcome to the Webmaster's Profit Center. On this site, we'll explore the many options that are out there for webmasters and bloggers to actually generate a little income from their sites.

No get-rich-quick schemes here. There's plenty of those around. What we WILL present are proven programs that will generate an income stream...maybe not a huge one, but certainly money in your pocket that you can spend as you please. Maybe you're just wanting enough to pay for a domain name and quality hosting, or an extra twenty, forty or even a hundred dollars a week would come in handy.
